Weekend Mosaic Workshops at Rex Studio

Saturday:

Lecture and Slide Show entitled "Mosaics Through the Ages"
An overview of Roman, Byzantine, and Contemporary Mosaics
  • Design discussion: how to choose a design for different techniques.
  • Mosaic demonstration: contemporary method of transposing a design onto clay.
  • The Making of a Mosaic (Roman Style) by the direct method
Setting tesserae directly into a mortar bed or other adhesive, following a choice of designs (Medieval pavements / Roman mosaic borders / Geometrical designs)
The mosaic will be 5" square (trivet size) using 1/4" clay tesserae.

Sunday:

  • Completion of the mosaic
  • Grouting
  • Discussion of different finishes



The cost of the workshop is $250. This includes the lecture, clay tesserae and cement materials, color samples kit, and coffee. Lunch is not included; you should bring your own.

Note: This workshop is based on colored clay; there is no glazing or firing involved. The color of the mosaic is from the color of the clay. Traditional colors of the Roman mosaics are beige, red, brown, and black. Size of the mosaics is 5" x 5".

8 Week Course on Roman Mosaics at Rex Studio


Mosaic Presentation: lecture with slides on the historical development of mosaic art. Introduction to the "Ravenna double reverse" method and its various phases of mosaic execution and to the materials used (marble, Venetian smalti glass and lime as a temporary binder).
Cutting technique using a hammer and hardie. Selection of the design for the mosaic. Copy and execution of the tracing. Practice marble cutting.
Preparation of the lime bed, transfer of the design. Practice cutting marble tesserae.
Cutting and setting.
Completion of the mosaic on the lime bed and gluing of the cheesecloth onto the mosaic surface.
Lifting of the mosaic from the lime bed and transfer into a permanent binder.
Completion of the mosiac: removal of the cheesecloth. Surface cleaning. Brushing and sealing.



The cost of the class is $350.00. Marble is not included, all other materials are included.

Rex Studio is located South of Allentown at the intersection of Route 100 and 29.
Registration with payment is due two weeks before the workshop begins.
The fees are refundable up to one week before the workshop begins.
